A quiet village in Liguria
A square, a church bell, a baker who knows your name.
Ligurian villages are small by design: a church, a square, a few shops or none, and houses stacked up a slope. This page lists homes in places of roughly under 3,000 residents, and many of them have far fewer.
Some villages sit on the water, such as Cervo or those of the Cinque Terre. Others lie inland up a valley road, where the sound at night is a stream and the church bell. Seaside villages are lively in July and August and calm for the rest of the year; hill villages are quiet all year and can feel empty in winter.
We chose the list of villages by hand. If a village you love is missing, tell us and we will check it.

What to check before you buy in a village
- Ask what is open in winter: a bakery, a bar, the doctor, the bus. Some villages have none of these in January.
- Visit at different times. A village can be lively on a summer Sunday and empty on a Tuesday in March.
- Look at the way to the door. Many old centres are lanes with stairs, and parking may be a walk away.
- Village life is friendly if you take part. Learning some Italian makes a real difference.
- Check the renovation rules. Old centres are often protected, and facade colours and windows may need approval.
