Homes in the Ligurian hills
Olive terraces, stone houses, a valley view. The coast is a short drive.
Behind the coast the land rises fast. Within 10 to 20 minutes by car from many beaches you reach terraced olive groves, chestnut woods and stone villages that feel far from the resorts. This is where houses with land, a garden and a view over a valley are found, often for less than a similar home on the shore.
The hills are most varied in the province of Imperia, in the valleys behind Imperia and Taggia around Dolcedo, Badalucco and Pieve di Teco, where the small Taggiasca olive grows. In Savona province look around Garlenda and Calice Ligure; near La Spezia, around Castelnuovo Magra and the Vara valley.
A home "in the hills" on this page is one in a hill or valley village, or one whose seller has tagged a hill or valley view.

What to check before you buy in the hills
- You will need a car. Check the last stretch of road: narrow, steep or unpaved access is common and matters in winter.
- Ask about water, heating and internet. Rural houses may rely on a well, a tank, wood or bottled gas, and fibre is not available everywhere.
- Terraced land (fasce) needs upkeep. Ask who maintains the dry-stone walls and how the land is classed.
- Plan for distance: the nearest supermarket, doctor and train station may be 15 to 30 minutes away.
- A stone house often needs work on the roof, damp and electrics. Have a surveyor (geometra) look at it before you sign.
