Christmas Magic in Sant’Agata: A Nativity Scene Full of Heart and Tradition

Discover the magic of Christmas in Sant’Agata, where a lovingly crafted Nativity scene—built by local youth for nearly 50 years—comes to life with moving figurines, timeless traditions, and heartfelt community spirit

Every Christmas, the small village of Sant’Agata in Imperia transforms into something magical, thanks to the Nativity scene created by the local youth community. For nearly fifty years, the young volunteers of the Comunità Giovani di Sant’Agata have poured their hearts into bringing the story of the Nativity to life, setting it against the rolling hills and peaceful landscapes of the Ligurian hinterland. The Nativity scene is not just a display, it feels like stepping into a tiny world full of life and wonder. Every year, it changes, offering something new to discover. Around 250 figurines, 30 of which move and perform everyday tasks, inhabit a carefully crafted landscape of houses, cobblestone streets, waterfalls, lakes, hills, mountains, olive groves, and scenes of old trades. Every little detail speaks of patience, creativity, and love for tradition, and you can feel the devotion of the people who have kept this tradition alive for decades. This year, the Presepe di Sant’Agata will be open from midnight on December 24th, right after the Christmas Eve Mass at 10:30 PM, and will remain open until January 6th, 2026. On Saturdays and holidays, visitors can come from 9:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 19:00, while on weekdays it is open from 14:00 to 18:30. Visiting the Nativity scene is a deeply moving experience. It’s a chance to slow down, to marvel at the skill and care poured into every corner, and to feel the warmth of a community coming together to celebrate something larger than themselves. It’s not just about the figures or the scenery, it’s about the love and devotion of generations of young people who have made it their mission to share this joy with everyone who comes. The Presepe di Sant’Agata is more than a holiday display, it is a celebration of heart, tradition, and community, a reminder of the beauty that comes from dedication, and a place where anyone who visits can feel the true spirit of Christmas.
